Chinese Medicine divides your body into five, main internal organ systems: the Liver, Spleen, Lungs, Kidneys and Heart. They all have very specific patterns of imbalances that have been well-documented over the centuries. Usually an organ system becomes weaker when it starts to move out of balance, yet your Liver Organ System is a bit different. It commonly gets congested, much like the water pipes of an old home. To make matters worse, this Liver Chi Congestion creates a tangible “negative energy” which can have major effects elsewhere in your body. The most common movement of this negative energy affects your digestive system. It may also invade your Lung Organ System or your lower body transferring a fire element and causing havoc there as well. This can show as with infections, like urinary tract infections, or skin problems.
Liver Chi Congestion needs to be cleared and dispersed. This is usually done by opening up and coursing the congestion which will let it out, move it through and release it. Think of releasing the steam from a pressure cooker. That is what the first half of this formula does–it helps to release the constraints caused by the pattern of Liver Chi Congestion. The key Chinese Herbs in this formula are known to act as the pressure valve on the above, described pressure cooker scenario. Physical manifestations of Liver Chi Congestion may be experienced as neck and shoulder tension, major tension headaches, tight chests, clenched jaws, anger, anxiety, frustration and constipation.
The second half of this formula works to rebuild the damage that the congestion usually causes, often severely weakening its target. In the case of the two Xiao Yao formulas, it works directly to rebuild your digestion. The relationship between your Liver and Spleen organ is defined as part of the Mother-Son construction cycle. Following the dictates of a ‘normal family life’, if the mother isn’t nourished and content, she cannot nurture her son. As a result, her son suffers. The ‘son’ is represented as your digestion is in this particular relationship, and must be strengthened to restore your body’s daily balance and proper functionality. Some common signs that your digestion is getting stronger can include: more energy, less bloating and gas, increased and stronger muscle tissue, increased mental clarity, less of a disposition to worry and more of a courageous attitude and demeanor.
